Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is regarded as the “Must Do” Day Hike in New Zealand!  Without a doubt, the scenery is absolutely stunning.  You will encounter mountain views, geothermal activity, sparkling lakes, and the opportunity to walk on a live volcano.  The hike covers 19.4kms (12 miles) through varying mountain and alpine terrain and takes on average 6-8 hours to complete in good weather with average fitness.  You will need to be well prepared for this hike, as the weather conditions can change suddenly.  In the middle of summer you can find yourself in sub-zero temperatures very quickly.  We have compiled a list of essential equipment that you should bring on your trip. We highly recommend that you spend the time to watch the video below to find out what you can expect along the hike.

My Waka Your Waka is an approved Department of Conservation Concessionaire for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and we offer convenient pick up and return transfers from any accommodation provider.  Turangi is the largest town closest to the start of the Crossing (25 minutes) and it is the ideal place to stay and get your supplies for the hike.
