Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is regarded as the “Must Do” Day Hike in New Zealand, and has been recently voted as one of the Top 3 Day Walks in the World!

Without a doubt, the scenery is absolutely stunning and Insta Worthy!

You will encounter mountain views, geothermal activity, sparkling lakes, and the opportunity to walk on a live volcano.  The Crossing covers 20.4kms (12.76 miles) through varying mountain and alpine terrain and takes on average 6-8 hours to complete in good weather with average fitness.  You will need to be well prepared for this hike, as the weather conditions can change suddenly.  In the middle of summer you can find yourself in sub-zero temperatures very quickly.  We have compiled a list of essential equipment that you should bring on your trip

My Waka Your Waka is an approved Department of Conservation Concessionaire for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

We offer TWO convenient types of transfer for you to enjoy the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Allow us to pick you up and return you to and from any accommodation provider. Your return time is prearranged and we meet you at the track end at the Ketetahi Shelter. This is our most popular option.

We also offer a One Way transfer from Ketetahi Road on State Highway 46 to the start of the the Crossing. We meet at a preaaranged time in the morning, then at the end of the day, you walk out to your vehicle on your own schedule.  This option adds an extra 1.2km’s walk, but it will save you a little cash

Turangi is the largest town closest to the start of the Crossing (25 minutes) and it is the ideal place to stay and get your supplies for the hike.
